4.15: Understand How an Increase in Greenhouse Gases Results in an Enhanced Greenhouse Effect and that this may Lead to Global Warming and its Consequences

GREENHOUSE GASES: Gases responsible for global warming - Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide, and CFC's (Chlorofluorocarbons)

ENHANCED GREENHOUSE EFFECT: Suggested link between the increase in greenhouse gas emissions by man and changes in global temperatures and climate conditions

ENHANCED GREENHOUSE EFFECT

EXPLANATION:

  1. Sun emits short wave radiation (ultraviolet radiation) which is absorbed and re-emitted at a longer wavelength (infrared/heat) by the Earth's surface
  2. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere absorb and re-radiates the longer wave radiation
  3. As a result, this heat is retained within the atmosphere to increase global temperatures - the enhanced greenhouse effect

IMPORTANCE OF CELL DIFFERENTIATION:

  • Rise in sea levels due to melting glaciers
  • Increased spread of diseases due to cold climate
  • Migration fo species to more habitable areas
  • Loss of habitat
  • Extinction and loss of biodiversity due to inhabitable environment and disruption to food chains
