5.10: Understand that Plants with Desired Characteristics can be Developed by Selective Breeding

SELECTIVELY BREEDING: Form of artificial selection involving the intervention of man in breeding of species to produce desired traits in offspring

SELECTIVELY BREEDING PLANTS:

SELECTIVELY BREEDING PLANTS

Diagram showing an example of selective breeding

PROCESS:

  • Plant species with desired characteristics are chosen to cross-pollinate and reproduce
  • As a result, gene for desired characteristic is passed onto offspring
  • Offspring that best expresses desired characteristic is chosen and selective breeding process is repeated
