5.20B: Understand How Cloned Transgenic Animals can be Used to Produce Human Proteins

CLONED TRANSGENIC ANIMALS: Organism that is genetically identical to transgenic parent who contains genes from different species as a result of the transfer of genetic material from one species to another

CLONED TRANSGENIC ANIMALS IN THE PRODUCTION OF HUMAN PROTEINS:

  • Cloned transgenic animals can be used to produce Human Proteins that can help treat diseases - e.g the use of Transgenic Bacteria to produce large quantities of Human Insulin to treat Diabetes
  • Cloned transgenic animals can also be used to develop organs that will not be rejected by the HUman immune system in transplants
